Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I want to tell you about two great designers producing Earth friendly fashion: Jungle Gurl & People Tree. Check out their stories and photos below, visit their sites, and let me know what you think. HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Jungle Gurl: The concept is simple, eco-science and yet ever-so chic. Take vintage fabrics that the former model-cum-actress-cum-designer, Natalie Golonka, has amassed over years of global travel and rework them into fabulously flattering one-of-a-kind bikinis. The first of which were quickly snapped up by LA notables Fred Segal and Planet Blue, and have since spread to several boutiques across the country. Hot!

People Tree: All you need to learn more about this UK based fashion company is their very insightful Mission Statement.

  • To support producer partners’ efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood.
  • To protect the environment and use natural resources sustainably throughout our trading and to promote environmentally responsible lifestyles and environmental initiatives to create new models to promote sustainability.
  • To supply customers with good quality products, with friendly and efficient service and build awareness to empower consumers and producers to participate in Fair Trade and environmentally sustainable solutions.
  • To provide a supportive environment to all stakeholders and promote dialogue and understanding between them.
  • To set an example to business and the government of a Fair Trade model of business based on partnership, people-centred values and sustainability.

Shorts For Summer, Shorts For Spring

I’m a gal who loves shorts and chooses them over skirts, a lot of the time, for Spring and Summer fashion…I’m also a gal who went to 12 years of Catholic school and had to wear a uniform skirt everyday. So yeah, I may a little biased against skirts

The thing is, lots of time ladies will choose a skirt over shorts because they think shorts are too boyish or sporty. But in today’s fashion, there are plenty of sassy, dressy and stylish options that will give you an instant hip and chic look. So try ditching your skirt for a day and try on a cool pair of shorts!

#1 French Connection $78

#2 Helmut Lang Leather Shorts $760 (for my super dupa baller readers)

#3 Alexander Wang $430

#4 J Crew $59.50

#5 Thread Social $255

#6 Top Shop $60

Fashion Tip For Women: Transitioning To Bare Legs

It’s about that time in both the West and East coasts to put away the opaque tights for Spring and Summer and transition to bare legs! Get the razors out ladies and embrace some skin. If you’re anything like me, the transition can feel weird at first. You just spent the last 6 or 7 months rocking all sorts of fun tights with your skirts, dresses and shorts and now with weather in the 70s it just feels weird. Well here are a few great tip to help with with the switch over:

  • Start with bare legs but keep the boots. (Preferably bootie boots) Going from opaque tights to bare legs and open toe shoes can be a bit jarring so take it one step at a time. You can also do bare legs with close-toe pumps as an option.
  • Mix and match a Winter/Fall tops with a Spring/Summer bottoms. Example: Pair a long-sleeve, knit sweater in black, brown or grey with a cotton, flowy skirt in beige, cream or floral print. Add booties and you’re done!
  • Add ankle socks to strappy sandals. If you don’t have a pair of bootie boots or you just want to try something different and fun…invest in a few pairs of ankle socks in pretty pastel colors like pink, yellow and cream then throw on your favorite strappy sandals or heels. Viola! a great mix of Winter and Spring.

Here are some photo examples. (Click on the image for larger view) Happy Transitioning!

Top 5 Must Haves For Spring

A warm day on the West and East coast can only mean one thing…SPRING is just around the corner! Time to put away your Winter knits and break out the delicate florals. Here are some Must Haves for Spring. Jump to the bottom to learn how to wear them. Click on the image for a larger view.

#1 Neutral Wedges: Pair these comfy shoes with floral dresses, shorts or skinny jeans. The lighter color is great for Spring and looks hot with a bright colored pedicure.

#2 Floral Print Dresses: Girly, comfortable and sexy all in one! Have fun by accessorizing with your favorite thick OR skinny belt. You can rock Vans, Keds, Converse or Vintage combat boots to add a little boyish flair to a very girly look.

#3 Khaki Trench Coat: April showers bring May flowers right? Well, don’t let a little rain make you any less fashionable. Throw on a sexy trench and make sure to belt it so you don’t look sloppy.

#4 Black Dress Shorts: Great for Spring AND Summer (though for Summer I would save them for evening wear) pair these classy black shorts with a silk blouse or tucked in button down. Whatever top you choose, try tucking it in…it’ll give you more shape and a much more polished look.

#5 Bralet Top: Take your undies out of the bedroom but not in a trashy way  Try a bralet under a thin button down shirt with the top 3 or 4 buttons open. Or for my brave ladies with the tight abs, go for the bralet alone BUT wear it with a high-waisted bottom so your belly button is hidden. Generally speaking belly button showing = no bueno.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you’re shopping for this Spring.

Go Buy Now! Stripes, Stripes & More Stripes

I’ve always been a HUGE lover of stripes. In fact, there was a point in my life where I had to force myself to buy some solids to complete my wardrobe. Now I’m not saying anyone should ever wear stripes from head to toe…But throwing on an article of clothing with some stripes always adds flair while still looking sophisticated!

Fashion Tip: Stay away from lower body stripes (meaning no shorts or pants)…it’ll make you look bottom heavy and no one wants that!

For the Fellas

I was recently asked to do a post on Men’s Fashion…to share some tips with the fellas.
Well to all my male readers, the same rules apply…it’s all about fit, layers, accessories and looking polished. Some fashion no no’s the boys should look out for are as follows:

  • Ditch your over sized baggy pants! The trend of wearing your bottoms around your bootie is long gone. Even most of the hip hop stars who ignited this trend have tossed their baggys for a more fitting form pant. Now I’m not saying you fellas should rock the skinnys us ladies can get away with…I’m just saying get some jeans and dress pant that will actually stay on your waist without a belt on.
  • Tuck in your dress shirt and put on a belt! It’s that simple. It doesn’t matter if you have on a blazer and dress shoes, leaving your dress shirt hanging out of your pants makes you look sloppy and unpolished. Instead, tuck in that shirt and show off a simple yet classy leather belt with a small buckle. It will take you “dressed up” from a 3 to a 10!
  • Don’t be afraid to layer. Some of the hottest looks for men this Fall & Winter incorporate sweaters, vests and scarves. Give it a go! Try a heather gray thermal, with a navy V-Neck sweater or buttoned-up cardigan on top. You can even throw on a blazer to complete the look.
  • Stick to earth tones and leave the color for the ladies. I find that men look best when they keep it simple. Now that doesn’t mean you can’t throw on a splash of color here and there…but in general I find the following colors work best on men of all skin tones: brown, black, gray, tan, navy, white, beige, burgundy & green.

Fashion Tip: Some of my favorite places to shop Men Fashion are John Varvatos, Urban Outfitters, JCrew Men’s Shop in NY, Army/Navy Stores, The Gap, Banana Republic & Barneys .
