artist statement
AS A multi-passionate creative who loves storytelling, enteRING the world of visual arts via photography and collage FELT LIKE A NATURAL ADDITION TO MY PERFORMING ARTS PRACTICE.
In 2024, I USED my love of photography to explore my identity and culture, photographing the home of my family and ancestors...the Dominican Republic. “Con Cariño” is my first photo collection from the island, tinted in hues of brown, reflecting the land and the people.
I USE collage art as a WAY to share my experience as an Afro-Latina living in the United States. I incorporate my dominican heritage and my ties to an urban upbringing in NYC to show the beauty and ugliness that simultaneously exists in these two worlds.
As a woman of color, who was taught by society to DISLIKE her hair, features and hue, I’m also using my art to highlight THE beauty Black and Brown women possess, while embracing my own insecurities and glorifying afro features.
My work is playful and colorful yet can reveal a darker side of my psyche, exploring injustice, capitalism, racism and “otherness”. As a self-taught artist my first intro to collage art was the great Romare Bearden. But contemporary artists like MICKALENE THOMAS, Deborah Roberts, Al-basser Holly and Joiri Minaya provide me further present-day inspiration.
